The Voom Room
We had the absolute honor of stepping into the Voom Room in Indianapolis only a few days
after they re-opened their stunning new space. We met with Kori, the Owner of Voom Room,
bright and early before they had opened for the day and got to watch the excitement on guests’
faces as they entered for the first time into their new salon home!
Kori has been in the industry since 2008, she has worn many hats during that time! She
graduated from Paul Mitchell The School and has been a stylist, salon owner, and educator.
She has even auditioned to be National Educator - she found that being a National Educator,
specifically a color specialist, has helped her from becoming stagnant in her journey. The value
she puts on education is evident in the way that she has grown her business, and a few of her
top stylists are also educators! Having stylists that are also educators benefits her team
because, in her words, it is like if they have internal education! It also has expanded her team's
services, for example, she has a stylist who is a talented Aqua Educator and can offer top-notch
education services!
Speaking of education, Kori is passionate about hiring stylists right out of school. She attributes
this practice to a few key successes in her business. The culture that Kori has built-in her space
can largely be attributed to her hiring process. She has found that when she hires the person
that is behind the chair, rather than just for their skill she can craft the salon’s culture.
Kori’s long history in Stylist education has made her confident in her abilities to take young
stylists from good to great. She has a detailed apprenticeship program that includes both written
and skill-based exams. This approach allows Kori to train all of her new stylists to do processes
and techniques the same way, so guests' experiences are consistent and always excellent.
What do you think, could you hire apprentices in your business?
